Things I Am Liking
Composing soundtracks for the movies in my head, a twist on the classic Italian Espresso, and more things I have been liking.

I always write the introduction to Things I Am Liking after having compiled the four or five things to share. Today, I am writing the introduction after having completed the entire column.
At first, the decision to wait until I was done with the writing was a casualty of how the morning had developed, but then I noticed a pattern in the things I have been enjoying: listening, learning, and doing away with judgment.
I couldn’t see the connection between the movies in my head and the audiobooks I have been listening to, and neither the one between the Los Angeles museum scene and an Espresso with lemon zest, until I paused, mid-writing, to notice how often my experience is be limited and obscured by judgment and fear.
Just to offer a couple of examples that are relevant to what you are about to read: I am talking about the fear of being with my own thoughts on a hot September morning driving along Interstate 5 South, which could have prevented me from listening to Runaway Trains, or my constant judgment of “new” technologies, which could have prevented me from learning about ancient myths and what was behind the speech JFK gave after his debate with Richard Nixon.
It’s fascinating to notice how much wider the space for possibilities becomes, when I leave room for it, unconditionally ready for whatever may come.
I look forward to hearing what you have been liking since we last read each other.
